Breast Cancer Awareness & Education

The St. Louis Alumnae Chapter volunteers & helps coordinate many events in the St. Louis area to spread Breast Cancer Awareness & Education including: The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure®, Think Pink with the St. Louis Rams, and Friend-to-Friend Program.

ZTA began its association with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1992 when it became the first national sponsor of the Race for the Cure’s® National Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program.  ZTA provides the signature pink t-shirts and caps for the survivors as well as the “In Celebration Of” and “In Memory Of” back signs for participants to wear during the race.

The St Louis Alumnae Chapter coordinates the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure’s® Survivor Pavilion and Recognition program as well as provides volunteers for Race Day along with several Collegiate Chapters.

In October, the chapter teams up with several collegiate chapters during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to distribute Breast Cancer Information before a St. Louis Rams' home game.

In conjunction with KSDK Newschannel 5 and the St Louis Komen Affiliate, our Alumnae Chapter is responsible for sending out all of the Breast Cancer information for the “Friend-to-Friend” Program featured on Newschannel 5 that is requested by various St. Louis area residents and companies.

ZTA Foundation

The St. Louis Alumnae Chapter has various fund-raisers throughout the year to support the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation. The Foundation, provides support for...

Scholastic Programs – More than $530,000 was given in scholarships to over 313 graduate and undergraduates in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years.

Philanthropic Programs – Since 1992 Zetas across the country have distributed 9.75 million breast self examination shower cards, 3.5 million pink ribbons, and 6 million breast self exam reminder cards.

Leadership Development – The ZTA Foundation supports the educational and leadership aspects of the Traveling Leadership Consultant program, National Leadership Conference and the House Director’s Seminar.

Educational Programming & Speakers – The ZTA Foundation funds AlcoholEdu®, a Web-based alcohol abuse prevention program. All ZTA new members must complete this program prior to their initiation. The ZTA Foundation also funds educational articles in Themis, and speakers at the National Leadership Conference and Convention. The Foundation supports Stand Up! Stand Out!, a women's self-empowerment program with Kappa Delta Sorority.

The St. Louis Alumnae Chapter enjoys fund-raising for the ZTA Foundation through events such as...

Plant Sale - Our top-fundraising event in the 2008-2009 year! A portion of the total bill will come right back to the chapter for fund-raising efforts! There is also an opportunity to purchase pink begonias that will be used during the Race for the Cure. Click here to download an order form.

Gift Wrapping - Wrap gifts with Zeta sisters at designated Borders stores at set times and collect donations. Sign up here or at monthly meetings during November and December. This was the second largest fundraiser during the 2008-2009 year. It is a great way to get in the holiday spirit and get involved with the alumnae chapter. Contact Claudia for more information.

Super Spa Sunday V - Your Island Oasis!  Super Spa Sunday is a fundraiser where ZTA brings in professional masseuses and manicurists for a day of relaxation.   It's just like going to any other spa. Schedule a time for the service you are interested in and be ready for a wonderful day.  In the past we had a great assortment of friends, moms, aunts, cousins, in-laws, sisters, children and fathers that attended with their ZTA. Snacks are provided – this year with our tropical theme! It's a great opportunity to raise money for ZTA and have fun too.  This was our third largest fundraiser in the 2008-2009 year! Sign-ups will begin in January, communicated via email on our listserve and Facebook by Lynn.

May Banquet Raffle - Our last official meeting of the year combined with a raffle includes an opportunity to win great prizes.  This was the fourth largest fundraiser in the 2008-2009 year.  Some of the prizes included gift cards to Target and Wal-Mart, tickets to a Cardinals baseball game, handmade jewelry, themed baskets and much more!  If you would like to help by donating an item/basket to the raffle or contact area businesses for items please contact Becky.

Save Lids to Save Lives - ZTA has teamed with Yoplait® to Save Lids to Save Lives. For each pink lid collected, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and an additional 5 cents to the ZTA Foundation for all pink lids turned in to ZTA. In 2008, ZTA collected over 311,000 lids! Bring your washed pink lids to any meeting this year to be turned in.

A special message from the Vice President of Fundraising...

Join the Fun as a ZTA Fundraiser Fanatic!
We have exciting events every year to raise money for ZTA.  I am inviting you to join the fun and make our events successful!  We are setting up a committee (ZTA Fundraiser Fanatics) that will help with several events from September through May.

By signing up to be a Fundraiser Fanatic you are agreeing to volunteer.  You may be asked to send out letters for raffle items, help set up at Super Spa Sunday and other requests as they are needed throughout the year.

I will send out communication to the committee about our needs for each event.  Joining the Fundraiser Fanatics is a great way (even if you have limited time) to get involved in the alumnae chapter.
Fundraising can be a rewarding experience!

Please contact Becky to be a ZTA Fundraiser Fanatic or with questions.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

The St. Louis Alumnae Chapter also participates in various other volunteer and philanthropic activities throughout the year. At the February 2007 meeting, the chapter held a baby shower... for Nurses for Newborns! Chapter members collected several items, such as diapers, baby wipes, vaporizers, nail clippers, thermometers, lotion, shampoo, receiving blankets, baby towels & washcloths, pacifiers, clothing, and much more. A special visitor from Nurses for Newborns stopped by to collect the items and talk about the founding of the nurse home-visiting agency that serves teen mothers, the mentally or physically challenged, sick infants, and families in need.

At the January 2009 meeting, the chapter welcomed a special guest speaker from Kingdom House. Kingdom House has provided high quality social services to low income families for over 100 years. At Zeta Day 2009, hosted by the St. Louis Alumnae Chapter, collegiate attendees cute fleece and created lap blankets for them to give to their families. All attendees participated by collecting items from the Kingdom House wish list. In addition, members collected items for the wish list throughout the year.
